Gospel Omanya - Senior Manager, Projects Management and Deployment

Gospel Omanya - Seed Systems Manager Gospel Omanya is a plant breeder/geneticist with a BSc in agriculture (honors), an MSc in plant breeding from the University of Nairobi and PhD in plant genetics and breeding from the University of Hohenheim. Before joining AATF, he worked for the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) Sahelian Center in Niamey, Niger, as a Special Project Scientist, responsible for Pearl millet improvement for West and Central Africa. His assignment entailed conducting participatory variety selection trials with over 500 smallholder farmers in West Africa, and evaluation of the Pearl millet Improvement program for West Africa. In this capacity he worked with smallholder farmers and facilitated development of farmer-managed seed production and distribution systems. His outstanding work in science and technology transfer, earned him recognition as a biographee in the Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, 2008 – 2009. He is a founder member of the Plant Breeders Association of Kenya and has worked on drought tolerance in sorghum and sesame improvement projects. From 1996 to 2000, as an ICRISAT Research Scholar and Pre-doctoral Associate at the University of Hohenheim, he worked on Striga resistance in Sorghum Project for East and West Africa. In this project, he validated laboratory and field techniques that are now available for screening for Striga resistance in cereals. From 2005 till 2007, he was Projects Manager, with responsibility for the day-to-day implementation of AATF's projects portfolio. With the Institution’s growth and expansion, he is now the Seed Systems Manager, and oversees formulation and implementation of the technology deployment strategies, including stewardship, products demonstration and delivery to target users. Gospel is a Kenyan national.
