
Background
The Federal government of Nigeria through the National Varietal Release Committee (NVRC) approved the commercial release of 4 TELA maize varieties on January 12, 2024.
The four varieties approved by the NVRC are, SAMMAZ 72T, SAMMAZ 73T, SAMMAZ 74T, and SAMMAZ 75T.
Following the approval, the TELA team organized a series of planning meetings to prepare for the formal launch of the product to the market. The OTF Nigeria held a meeting in February 2024 a draft roadmap was developed for the Pre- Launch and Post- Launch activities. Following the approval of the TELA Maize Varieties in Nigeria, the stage is set for a robust engagement plan to incentivize the participation of all actors, especially farmers and private seed companies.
The Launch
On June 11, 2024, the TELA team organized a successful launch event for the approved TELA Maize varieties at the Abuja Continental Hotel. The guest of honor at the ceremony was Hon. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State Agriculture and Food Security, Republic of Nigeria.
Other dignitaries included the representative of the Minister of Health, Dr L.K. Bako-Aiyegbusi, Dr Canisius Kanangire AATF Executive Director, Prof. Aggrey Ambali, Chair of AATF Board of Trustees, Dr Audu Grema – Senior Manager for Agriculture – Gates Foundation The top leadership of IAR was also present, led by Prof. Kabiru Bala, VC ABU Zaria, and Prof Ado Yusuf, Executive Director of IAR. The function was also attended by more than 150 representatives of various agencies including development partners, media, government line ministries, and representatives of farmers’ organizations.
Key Messaging
The event was marked by an upbeat tone from the keynote addresses. The Hon. Minister for Agriculture and Food security, highlighted and celebrated the role of the IAR Nigerian Scientists in the TELA Maize project and joined the Health Ministry representative in reaffirming the health and safety of the product to farmers and the public. The Minister reconfirmed the government’s commitment to support TELA roll-out. Other speakers amplified the role of effective partnerships that delivered TELA Maize to farmers, citing the critical role of effective regulatory oversight and sustained political goodwill by the Nigerian government to support biotechnology in agricultural transformation. Supporting messages re-emphasized the need to ensure adequate and reliable seed supply as the product gets to the market. Nigeria was lauded for being a trailblazer in the adoption of biotechnology in agriculture and releasing the first GM Maize crop after South Africa. The promise of increased productivity for maize farmers in Nigeria was emphasized along with affirming the potential for biotechnology to address productivity challenges facing farmers. The excellent collaborative efforts of the key players IAR, AATF, CIMMYT, BAYER, BMGF and USAID were recognized for successfully delivering TELA maize to farmers’ hands.
Media Coverage
More than 17 news media outlets were present at the event. In addition, a social media plan was implemented by AATF with support from the OFAB Nigeria team on the livestreaming of the event on YouTube and Facebook. More than 17 news stories were published in mainstream media by the end of day 11 June 2024, with additional stories published in the lead-up to the event. Overall, the tone of the stories was positive with a strong focus on celebrating Nigeria’s leadership role in biotechnology and the promise to address the maize yield gap and strengthening the food security profile of the country. Supplementary messages focused on the comparative position of Nigeria and other African countries in biotechnology adoption.
