(Abuja, November 13, 2024) The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) has called on Nigerian science journalists to uphold professionalism and accuracy in reporting scientific advancements, particularly as the nation continues to achieve milestones in agricultural biotechnology.
Dr. Jean Baptiste, AATF Regional Representative, made the appeal during his goodwill message at the 8th OFAB Nigeria Media Award ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday.
“In today’s rapidly evolving world, science and technology are critical drivers of progress, especially in agriculture,” he said. “Innovations such as agricultural biotechnology, mechanization, and climate-smart practices have immense potential to combat food insecurity, improve livelihoods, and empower smallholder farmers across Africa. However, the success of these innovations depends largely on accurate, balanced, and well-informed reporting.”
Dr. Baptiste emphasized the media’s vital role as a bridge between science and society, stating: “Journalists shape public perceptions, inspire action, and foster trust. It is essential for them to uphold professional standards, emphasize factual accuracy, and present information grounded in science. Misinformation, whether deliberate or inadvertent, can erode public trust and delay critical advancements that could significantly benefit communities.”
In his capacity as the Pod Borer Resistant Cowpea Project Manager, Dr. Baptiste reaffirmed AATF’s commitment to providing transparent, evidence-based information to empower journalists. He encouraged collaboration between scientists and the media, highlighting the need for open dialogue, rigorous inquiry, and truth in storytelling.
“We appeal to journalists to recognize the transformative power of scientific breakthroughs and to report them with precision and sensitivity. Together, we can ensure that the narrative of science and innovation in Africa is told with clarity, fairness, and integrity,” he added.
He urged journalists to reflect on their responsibility to educate, inform, and inspire, emphasizing the importance of telling Africa’s science and innovation story accurately and effectively.
