CROSS-CUTTING PRIORITIES

NUTRITION SENSITIVE AGRICULTURE

Agriculture and nutrition are linked at all stages of the food value chain, (from production to markets to final consumption), however, agricultural value chain programs and nutrition programs have different goals. Agricultural value chain programs are focused on increasing incomes through increased production, improved quality, improved storage and greater efficiency, which result in higher prices for the products.

In as much as agricultural programs focus on increasing incomes and improving food availability for the food insecure (who are often nutritionally vulnerable), these interventions alone have not been sufficient to improve nutrition. For example, improved food production and market availability does not ensure that nutritionally vulnerable populations will consume more nutritious foods. Households may instead choose to buy more processed, convenient, or less nutritious foods. Furthermore, improvements in post-harvest handling or storage could lead to losses in the nutrient content of crops.

CCP FUNDAMENTALS

VISION

Reduce malnutrition rates in the small holder farming community households

GOAL

Integrating Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) into Agricultural value chains for improved dietary diversity and nutrition behaviors in Africa

TARGET AUDIENCE

Small Holder Farmer Households, Processors, and Vendors

CCP BENEFITS

Integration of NSA activities along the agricultural value chain are of utmost importance in ensuring the nutrition vulnerable populations are catered for and that nutrition security is attained. To integrate NSA into AATF’s projects and programs, we have made deliberate efforts by developing a strategic roadmap with clear structure, capacity, and collaborations within the organization to ensure that our programs are nutrition sensitive and that AATF contributes to positive nutrition outcomes.

While agricultural value chain programs focus on economic goals like increased production and efficiency, their synergy with nutrition programs is essential to achieve comprehensive food security and improved nutrition outcomes. This integration underscores the importance of holistic approaches that consider both agricultural productivity and nutritional impact, ultimately aiming for sustainable improvements in food access and dietary quality for all segments of society.
